Introduction

The initial investment in cloth nappies can be daunting, especially as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite in Australia. Whether you’re on a tight budget or want to try cloth nappies without overspending, AlvaBaby Cloth nappies are a great choice, particularly for your newborn.

Let’s dive into a detailed review of AlvaBaby, known as the ‘China Cheapies’, which offer an affordable cloth nappy option that comes in cute prints and provides great value for money. To be honest, the one reason they came onto my radar was their packs of 6, which have so many beautiful designs, and cost less than $10 per nappy. They were ideal for a fun photoshoot and cake smash. The six cute designs meant I wasn’t worried about a nappy change during the party.  I’d also been given a few secondhand nappies and was impressed with their performance.  So let’s look more closely at what’s to love, and of course, what’s not to love about this affordable cloth nappy brand.

Brand Background

AlvaBaby began operations in China in 2010 when the founders discovered cloth nappies, but these were costly and unaffordable for many parents. Therefore, the company was established to make cloth nappies more affordable than the options already available in the market.

As the years passed, the brand continued to improve its quality and introduce new, fun designs, gradually becoming popular as baby shower gifts. In 2013, the company began using digital printing to create better prints as well as positioning patterns.

Today, they ship worldwide and offer a variety of collections that include pocket size, AIO, AI2, swim nappies, and over six different types of inserts. Their product list also includes liners, wet bags, swim nappies, training pants, baby sheets and pillows, baby shower gift ideas, and other accessories.

There are three sizes of pocket nappies available:

Nappy Size

Insert dimension

Nappy Dimensions

Multiple insert options available

Newborn Nappy Pocket

Newborns who weigh less than 5.4 kg

12.4” x 4.4”

13” x 10.25”

Yes

4 options for inserts

One Size Fits All

For babies from 3 kgs to toddlers up to 15 kgs

13.38” x 5.31”

5” X 13”

6 options for inserts

Big Size Pocket Nappy

1-3.5 years

15” x 6.3”

15” x 17.91”

One option is a four layer super absorbent microfiber insert

All three sizes of these pocket nappies have an outer layer of TPU and a faux suede cloth inner. Apart from this, all three nappy sizes have hip snaps and crossover snaps designed to prevent the “wing droop.”

The newborn pocket nappy also features Velcro options, which are particularly useful for newborns.

When ordering from the AlvaBaby website, you can select the type of inserts you’d like to purchase. Here’s a quick rundown of the various options for these three types:

Insert Options for the Newborn Pocket Nappy

  • 3-layer microfiber
  • 3-layer bamboo blend
  • 4-layer bamboo blend

Insert Options for the One Size Fits All Pocket Nappy

  • 3-layer microfiber
  • 3-layer bamboo blend
  • 4-layer bamboo blend
  • 4-layer bamboo charcoal blend
  • 5-layer bamboo blend
  • 5-layer bamboo charcoal blend

Insert Options for the Big Size Pocket Nappy

  • 4-layer super absorbent microfiber insert

I would highly recommend upgrading to the 5-layer insert, as a majority of AlvaBaby users felt that fewer inserts simply don’t provide sufficient absorbency.

Fortunately, the pocket size on these nappies is large, making it simple to stuff with liners and add extra booster inserts for added absorbency.

Materials & Sustainability

AlvaBaby nappies are among the most economically priced on the market. Known as “China Cheapies,” they offer good value for money even if they lack the boutique quality of premium brands.

  • Pocket Nappies: TPU outer, faux suede cloth inner. Available in NB, OSFM, and Big.

    Insert Options:
    • NB: 3-layer microfiber, 3-layer bamboo blend, 4-layer bamboo blend

    • OSFM: 3–5 layer bamboo/microfiber/charcoal blends

    • Big: 4-layer super absorbent microfiber

  • AIO/AI2/Fitted Options: AIO with 4-layer bamboo insert sewn in + pocket. AI2 with snap-in inserts. Bamboo fitted for heavy wetters.

  • Eco Note: No OEKO-TEX certification, but marketed as Climate Pledge Friendly (Amazon).

Ease of Use

  • Setup & stuffing.

  • Washing & drying guidance.

  • How it performs for new parents / daycare.

Real Parent Feedback

What parents liked:

  • Fun, functional designs (seasonal, character, plain).

  • Affordable way to build a stash.

  • Wide pocket makes inserts easy to use.

  • Climate Partner certified (Amazon).

  • Many parents resell their nappies secondhand after use.

What parents didn’t like:

  • NB size prone to leaks, small pocket opening.

  • Inserts not absorbent enough — need boosters.

  • Charcoal bamboo inserts = microfiber core with synthetic top.

  • Multiple boosters make the nappy bulky.

  • Not the best choice for heavy wetters unless paired with hemp inserts from other brands.

Generally parents say AlvaBaby nappies are a great budget-friendly way to start with modern cloth nappies.  They offer fun prints and a decent daytime fit. Most recommend swapping the stock microfibre inserts for bamboo or hemp boosters, especially for overnight use. Quality is variable, but they’re widely seen as good value if you manage expectations on durability.

Pros & Cons

Here’s a quick overview of the main pros and cons of AlvaBaby nappies. Because some of us have heavy wetters while others do not, I went the extra mile and compared notes with other parents who also used AlvaBaby nappies. I also spoke with parents who used nappies as well as those who experimented with newborn and large-size nappies. In the end, I’m sharing my opinion along with feedback from other parents to give you a complete picture of the nappy and its wide range of inserts.

Pros

  • Affordable and easy to build a stash
  • A wide range of fun and colourful designs, including basic prints, plain nappies, and cute position designs.
  • Versatile—AI2 nappies (all-in-two) with multiple insert options, offering the choice to switch between a nappy cover or pocket, as well as an AIO nappy with a 4-layer bamboo insert.
  • Pocket nappies come in newborn sizes with a variety of insert options.
  • All nappies come with a variety of insert options.
  • Can be used with inserts from other brands
  • Designed for environmentally conscious parents, it has the Climate Pledge Friendly certification on Amazon.
  • All pocket nappies have crossover snaps as well as hip snaps for a better fit with no “wing droop.”
  • One-year warranty from the date of purchase

Can be sold as secondhand nappies

Cons

  • Lower quality than boutique brands
  • No recycling programme
  • 3-layer and 4-layer bamboo and microfiber inserts have low absorbency.
  • Bamboo inserts take time to air dry.
  • The newborn size has complaints of leaks.
  • Extra layering with AlvaBaby inserts does cause them to become bulky.

Where to Buy

AlvaBaby’s website has the widest range and bundle deals. They’re also available on Nappy Box Co, Green Things, Chirpy Cheeks (NZ), and The Nappy Gurus.

AlvaBaby offers bundles, multipacks, and clearance items on its website.

Price & Value

For the price, the nappy gets a 10 out of 10 on quality and longevity.

The nappy does not leak or delaminate and continues to do well after months of washing. Unfortunately, the same can not be said about the inserts.

However, some parents who used AlvaBaby for their first child in its early years did feel that the quality had declined recently. All the same, the company continues to offer a one-year unconditional refund and return policy and a one-year warranty.

If you plan on using cloth full-time, 18–24 nappies is a good starting stash. For part-time or daycare use, 6–12 is usually enough.

Yes, but they need boosting with 5-layer bamboo or hemp inserts.

AlvaBaby nappies come with a choice of inserts depending on the style and pack. Options include 3-layer microfiber, 3–5 layer bamboo blends, bamboo charcoal blends, and a hemp-cotton mix.

Knock solids into the toilet, separate inserts, and wash at no hotter than 30℃ with detergent free from bleach, softeners, or brighteners. Line dry in the sun or tumble dry on low. Wash before first use; full absorbency builds after 6+ washes.

The shells are durable and can last through one or more children with proper care. Inserts tend to wear out faster and may lose absorbency over time, but can be replaced or boosted with other brands.
