One of the most exciting parts of starting with modern cloth nappies is building your stash. We know this can feel like a drain on your pocket, but that’s where your local council may be able to help. Across Australia, many councils now offer cloth nappy rebates to encourage families to make the switch to eco-friendly options. These rebates can vary significantly depending on your council — some cover 50% of your purchase cost, often capped at $100–$150, while others provide alternative incentives such as prize draws or require attendance at a cloth nappy workshop before applying.

Councils see this as crucial, as disposable nappies make up one of the largest contributors to household waste in Australia, with more than 3.75 million nappies thrown away every day. Each child will use around 6,000 disposables before toilet training, and every single one takes hundreds of years to break down in landfill. To tackle this problem, local councils across Australia now offer rebates, subsidies, or workshops to help families switch to cloth. These programs not only cut waste but also make modern cloth nappies more affordable.
